On their tour of Granite City, Illinois, John Pertzborn and Randi Naughton visited the infamous Stoppkotte’s Super Skate in downtown Granite City. Beginning in 1909, Stoppkotte’s has been a popular destination for children to skate during the weekend, roller hockey teams to practice, and for birthday parties. While there, John & Randi took a trip down memory lane with owners Lori & Bob Stoppkotte. Lori tells the story of Bob’s grandparents, his parents, and now he and his wife, that have been the owners of Stoppkotte Super Skate throughout the years. Their staff also includes Gene, who began working at Stoppkotte’s in the mid 1940’s when the company was moved into the current building at 1823 Cleveland Blvd. Before relocating to the current building, the roller rink started out in a temporary cloth tent that could be moved from place to place. Bob goes on to tell John that his father moved the tent around town, setting up in any lot that he could lease for the summer. It truly is a family business!
