Our area of Southwestern Madison County is known for its’ steel manufacturing, steel processing, and for the vast transportation systems that encompass the community. These transportation systems include the four major interstate highways and the 2 beltways, the strategic location at the confluence of three major rivers, and the access to six Class 1 railroads, making our number one asset our fantastic location. Southwestern Madison County is located within a two day drive of 70% of the United States’ population, and 60% of all American businesses.     

What Drives Southwestern Illinois?

Transportation. Southwestern Madison County sits in the heartland of America, and is home to numerous companies that utilize the vast options of transportation that the midwest has to offer. Using rail, freight, and barge to deliver goods, these companies transport manufactured goods, grain, soy, and other essential items across the country. 

The North Harbor is the most northerly ice-free port on the Mississippi River operates year-round with 24-hour barge switching services. The mile-long slack-water harbor serves approximately 2,500 barges and 3 million tons of grain, steel, petro-chemicals, and other bulk goods each year. Facilities include: dry and liquid bulk terminals, general cargo dock, and roll-on/roll-off dock.

America’s Central Port: A Transportation Hub

America’s Central Port is located at the heart of the United States’ transportation network and provides exceptional access to all three major freight transportation modes; river rail and road. Located just north of downtown St. Louis, Missouri on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River is a 1,200 acre intermodal business and industrial campus.

Port tenants benefit from exceptional access to the Mississippi River, four interstate highway and six Class 1 railroads. Transportation via barge is the most cost-effective and energy-efficient way to move bulk goods from the American heartland to international markets.
