Throughout its history, the area has been home to heavy industry. Two of its oldest industrial firms: US Steel, Granite City Works and ASF Keystone, established in 1878 and 1905, respectively; have been part of the community for more than 100 years.
The list of the area’s major employers begins with US Steel, Granite City Works. It has over 2,100 workers and produces flat rolled sheet steel. ASF Keystone is next with more than 1000 employees. It makes castings and products for railroad cars, including Heidtman Steel, PreCoat Metals Company, Mid West Metal Coatings, Robinson Steel and Custom Steel Processing. Among other major companies in the area are American Colloid, which produces foundry sands, additives, and cat litter; Air Products and Chemicals, John Sakach Company, SCF Lewis and Clark, Kraft Heinz Foods, and Prairie Farms Dairy.

Northgate, offering easy access to major highways which connect to bustling commercial centers across the country, has become a major maunfactoring and distribution center with tenants that include Heidtman Steel, Ehrhardt Engineered Solutions and Chestnut Health Systems

Numerous industrial parks in Madison – Steven Mareas Industrial Park, Access Industrial Park, Fox Industrial Park –
accommodate a variety of ventures including Delivery Network, and Ozburn-Hessey Logistics. The city of Madison is also home to Magnesium Elektron North America Inc. (Luxfer MEL Technologies).
The Village of Pontoon Beach is now home to the Gateway Trade Port
at the intersection of I-270 and I-255. NorthPoint Development began with building #1, occupied by Amazon, Building #2 occupied by Quality Packaging Specialists International, building #3 is being built.
Steel Manufacturing and Processing
U.S. Steel Granite City Works is a leading supplier of high-quality flat rolled carbon steel products. This company serves the construction, container, piping and tubing service centers, as well as electrical equipment industries. The proximity to the Mississippi River and the many other interstate transit systems provides excellent accessibility for receiving raw materials and shipping finished steel products to manufacturing facilities throughout the Midwest, the South and the Southwest.
Through the development practice called “clustering” this area has been successful recruiting steel-using and steel processing companies.
